History of Magic Shops in Toronto

Toronto has only had a few magic shops.

Harry and Sophie Smith owned the Arcade Magic and Novelty Shop located at Yonge and Queen Street from 1942 until the early 1980s. It began in 1916 as a "Japanese Novelty Store" and started to import magic tricks during the first world war. Mr. Smith purchased the business in 1942 and changed the name.

Famous magicians who frequented the Arcade Magic and Novelty Shop included Amazing Randi, David Ben, Sid Lorraine, Doug Henning, Dunninger, Blackstone Sr, and Houdini.

Another famous Toronto magic shop that's since closed is Morrissey Magic. Founded by Herb Morrissey in 1959, Morrissey Magic grew to become Canada's largest magic shop and manufacturer. In 1978, Morrissey Magic had two Toronto locations and one retail magic shop in Montreal. Morrissey Magic was famous around the globe for its magician cups and balls.

Morrissey Magic closed its doors for good in 2013 after 54 years of selling and manufacturing magic supplies. Their shop was located at 2477 Dufferin Street in Toronto, Ontario.

The D. Robbins company purchased all remaining stock.
